ABSTRACT

This chapter assesses how, when, and where the white racial frame impacts the everyday actions of whites and others. Significant attention is given to racist actions of younger whites, such as in college partying and at Halloween events. The hyper-racialization of the video gaming culture is critically examined, with attention to recent research showing how much of it has become white nationalist in operation. Much contemporary research is examined that demonstrates how whites take racist material from centuries-old white racial framing and use it today for their everyday purposes, including individual and group entertainment. Much of this contemporary racist framing of Americans of color would likely be familiar to their white parents and grandparents. A later section deals at length with the frame’s many negative impacts, including overt white discrimination and the negative health effects of that discrimination reported by Americans of color in numerous surveys and other studies. This section also examines the significant white racial capital held by whites and their control of white-racialized spaces across society. And it assesses just what racial “identities” are, who creates them, and what exactly is “identity politics.”
