ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses the social and official meanings of a village. It narrates the story of the conception, birth and coming of age of a village, involving such stages as the advent of the village founder/founders in a jungle-clad region, the selection, demarcation and naming of the village site, followed by the allocation of village spaces that finally come to define a village.
