ABSTRACT

Chapter 1 examines foundational mathematics concepts related to ratios and proportions. This includes a discussion of the two types of ratios: joining/composing and comparing and the relationship between ratios and rates. In addition, we learn in Chapter 1 that ratio situations are communicated in a variety of different ways. This can be confusing for students and impact their conceptualization of ratio and proportion situations as well as their solutions to problems. Finally, this chapter discusses the idea that to understand a proportion, one must attend to two quantities. This is one way in which whole-number multiplication differs from proportionality.
