ABSTRACT

Academic librarians are under increasing pressure to publish due to universities’ expectations for excellence in scholarly publication and research. Although much has been written on librarianship and professional development, very little addresses how reference librarians can pursue substantial writing and research projects in the face of other responsibilities. This article presents an overview of the book publication process, including initial planning, obtaining a contract with a publisher, legal considerations in regard to contracts, relationships with editors, doing the research, organizing the content, and preparing the manuscript. Publishing a book can be a rewarding personal and professional experience.
