ABSTRACT

The aim of this chapter is to explain how to create a model while defining materials and constructions and to evaluate their impact on the energy consumption of buildings. The chapter starts with a tutorial on evaluating the impact of thermal mass in the envelope by comparing the performance of lightweight and heavyweight external wall construction. Learners can also find a method for calculating the thickness of insulation on the roof or in external walls. The tutorials cover analysis of roof insulation location (overdeck or underdeck) and use of a cool roof and a radiant barrier. Materials are the backbone of building construction. Choosing materials for construction is most important for building as it involves a huge cost. There is need to carefully look at various properties such as thermal mass, conductivity, surface finish and so on.
