ABSTRACT

This chapter begins our discussion of the intersection between technology and education, particularly higher education. We argue that mobile devices and technology certainly can be used as tools to effectively enhance student learning; however, this is often a fairly complex process. In order to understand this process in more depth, we will need to explore the variety of issues that connect technology and learning. This chapter begins by broadly discussing how technology may enhance learning or the classroom and then notes the significant monetary implications of technology in education. Following this discussion, this chapter shifts to focusing on how technology in an educational setting may constrain or be detrimental to learning. In particular, this chapter cites recent research that demonstrates negative effects of technology in the classroom. Lastly, this chapter provides a preview of the remaining chapters of this book.
