ABSTRACT

This chapter counters the error of equating the use of technology in the classroom as increasing student learning and success. While effective pedagogy in the classroom remains a primary goal, teachers today must contend with changing technological mediums and platforms and their relationship with student learning. The use of mobile devices, laptops, and tablets is often positioned as providing educational benefits in the classroom. However, with little pedagogical training to purposefully integrate the use of such technological devices or substantial evidence-based research to support the claims of increased student learning, instructors must mindfully embrace changes to their teaching practices in the classroom. This chapter will engage the aforementioned concerns of implementing technology in the classroom, with careful attention to the influence, if any, on student learning. First, examined in this chapter is the complex landscape of technology in the classroom. Next, a conceptual framework for understanding the relationship between technology and pedagogy is presented. Finally, this chapter will conclude with a discussion of the importance of teacher preparation and technology.
