ABSTRACT

Groups are an ideal medium for working with sibling issues. They offer an arena where people can meet other ‘siblings’ and re-examine these close bonds. Groups are an ideal medium for working with sibling issues. They offer an arena where people can meet other ‘siblings’ and re-examine these close bonds. The powerful sibling issues that had arisen in our individual work could be expressed with other group members. In the group Margaret had an opportunity to find siblings who could show her other perspectives on her relationship with her sister–ones who could see her sister’s point of view and understand the powerful pulls to behave in a certain way. It has been suggested by some theorists that sibling rivalry is part of an immature developmental phase – a stage dominated by narcissistic preoccupations about whether there is ‘enough to go around’.
