ABSTRACT

This chapter explores perspectives on academic time. These include boundaries and competing requirements and time from a budgeting perspective, whereby activities required should be considered from a variable or fixed perspective. It discusses the ‘9-to-5’ question, arguing that ‘9-to-5’ is a complicated concept in academic contexts. It identifies problems that trigger work seep, outlines an approach to calculating hours, and advocates for development of a fixed schedule. It asks readers to establish what type of academic they are (such as research, research/teaching, teaching), reflect on hours expected versus available hours, and create their own fixed schedule.
