ABSTRACT

Individuals handling police misconduct complaints, including investigators, supervisors, and executive personnel, require developed skills and abilities to ensure timely, thorough investigations and effective office management to meet the highest performance and integrity standards. Chapter 7 details topics for training and organizations that provide training, and discusses legal decisions relevant to some of the typical misconduct allegations and investigation procedures encountered in doing this work. The authors stress the need for investigative offices to consult with counsel regarding complex cases and changes in the law over time, such as currently seen with changing use of force standards in some jurisdictions.
