ABSTRACT

This chapter concludes the book. We have clarified the morphosyntactic status of Korean particles in a theory-neutral way. Most of all, it is pointed out that, by utilizing the concept of clitics properly, we can identify (syntactic) words from seemingly dependent elements. The chapter also summarizes important new findings and/or major arguments. It is emphasized that many particles, especially clausal connectives, can be used as complement markers regardless of their original meanings and/or functions. It is very important in describing linguistic facts to figure out whether a linguistic unit is used in its original meanings/functions or as a complement marker. Other agglutinative languages such as Japanese, Mongolian and Turkish could also be analyzed under the same framework.
