ABSTRACT

Taxonomy and speciation studies both involve the study of species delimitation. DNA taxonomy is significantly different from classical taxonomy. Approaches to DNA barcoding may be character-based or distance-based. Calculations indicate that there is sufficient information in a single gene for DNA barcoding. Potential new species can be flagged by this technique. Metagenomics, eDNA, and microbiome studies use high-throughput DNA sequencing approaches to identify the majority of microbe species in a sample without culturing individual species.
