ABSTRACT

Evolutionary biology can be split into macro- and microevolutionary domains. The goal of microevolutionary studies, implemented by population genetics approaches, is to understand evolutionary shifts in populations. The goals of macroevolutionary studies, from a phylogenetics approach, are twofold: first, to understand the relationships of organisms using trees and tree thinking, and second, to understand the characters that have evolved as homologies. Speciation lies at the interface of macro- and microevolution, and the process of speciation can be approached from both macro- and microevolutionary perspectives.
