ABSTRACT

India faces a wide spectrum of maritime threats ranging from non-traditional challenges, including those posed by various non-state actors and long-term threats from a rising China. Whilst the extant Sino-India balance of power has been maintained by India’s geostrategic advantage in the Indian Ocean, a Sino-Pakistan nexus and the expansion of Chinese maritime power, and economic and political influence in the Indian Ocean region could potentially alter the balance of power in China’s favour. This chapter examines India’s maritime security challenges and discusses the implications of Chinese influence in the region for India.
