ABSTRACT

India-China competition for influence in Africa has heightened in recent years with China emerging as the largest trade and economic partner for Africa exercising significant political authority over many African states. The establishment of a PLA Navy base at Djibouti is expected to further strengthen China’s strategic control in the region. This chapter examines India’s extant relationships with the East African states and Indian Ocean island countries to assess India’s relative influence in comparison to China and discusses future prospects.
