ABSTRACT

As the largest maritime power in the Indian Ocean region, India has played a key role in promoting multilateralism to address common maritime security challenges of the region. However, over time, it has adopted an insular approach towards leadership of the regional institutions. This pernicious approach to multilateralism could prove to be detrimental for India in the long term. This chapter discusses the various regional institutions and the role played by India and recommends strategic options to promote inclusive multilateralism in the region.
