ABSTRACT

The chapter introduces ethics and develops a set of methods for case analysis and ethical decision-making in business contexts. The focus is on utilitarianism, Kantian ethics, and virtue ethics. The chapter discusses (i) the philosophical background of these approaches, (ii) breaks them down to basic methods for ethical decision-making, (iii) provides basic examples of application, and (iv) suggests exercises to practice them. The application to business cases is demonstrated in detail with three example cases. The chapter also introduces further ethical methods based on ethics of care, Rawlsian ethics, and discourse ethics. Overall, the chapter develops eight methods for ethical analysis and decision-making. With this, the chapter lays the theoretical background in ethics for the remainder of the book.
