ABSTRACT

Dreams are one avenue for uncovering a client’s dysfunctional way of thinking, and ways to assist a client in remembering and interpreting a dream as well as dream incubation are offered. Besides dreams helping to define the dysfunctional ways of thinking, dreams over time can also reflect the progress in therapy in resolving the client’s dysfunctionality. Dreams have many different levels of meaning and relying on one interpretation is limiting. The client is encouraged to remain open to the dream over time in order to gain its fuller meaning in leading the client towards resolution. Returning to the dream in therapy generally takes the client back into the dream state, especially when the metaphoric language of the dream is joined using the yes-set. The new healthier ways of thinking may also be in the form of metaphoric images. The illustrative case study of Amy continues and a new case study of Molly is offered.
