ABSTRACT

The Visible Learning (Hattie, 2009) database is the largest educational database ever created. It contains thousands of meta-analyses focused on what works best to improve students’ learning. In this chapter, we mine the VL database for tools that teachers of adolescents can use to impact learning. We note that some strategies work best for developing surface learning, while others work better for deep learning and still others ensure transfer of learning. Included in this chapter are several vignettes of classroom teachers implementing the approaches with secondary school students.
