ABSTRACT

The Learning Challenge is designed to help children think and talk about their learning. The Learning Challenge is one way to help children talk about being out of their comfort zone. At the heart of the Learning Challenge is the ‘pit’. Deliberately and strategically creating a state of cognitive conflict in the minds of learners is at the heart of the Learning Challenge. The Learning Challenge begins with a concept, theme or idea. The purpose of the Learning Challenge is to get children into the pit. This helps them to grow more and more comfortable with challenge and wobble. The children will look for ways to challenge themselves. In other words, when children are given choices in future, their learning will increase because they pick the challenging option rather than decrease because, as the research suggests, they pick the easier option.
