ABSTRACT

This chapter will review the use of theatre-based programmes in different settings across the globe for tackling issues associated with social exclusion such as domestic violence as well as for different population groups who often experience social exclusion, such as LGBTI people and people with disabilities. The chapter begins by introducing the importance of theatre as a means of increasing empathic understanding across diversity and then presents two case studies: That Uppity Theatre and Being Frank. The first of these overviews a 30-year body of work, and the second explores the participatory process by which such programmes can be developed.
