The squiggle

ByLaura Dethiville

For French psychoanalysts, the term “squiggle” is indissociably linked to Winnicott, albeit without always perceiving its significance. Its translation has always been difficult and unclear. If we refer to the English term, we understand how Winnicott encourages the child to doodle, and these doodles in sequence constitute a squiggle; that is, literally, an illegible signature. Winnicott’s squiggle was composed by two people, child and therapist, each continuing the freeform line of the other.
