ABSTRACT

This chapter examines fear of crime and its implications. Fear of crime emanates from past victimization, disorder, and community interactional processes Traditional police strategies emphasize crime reduction, but are not focused on a community’s perception of crime. Yet fear of crime has significant economic and social consequences. Unlike traditional police strategies, community policing, as a direct result of its emphasis on people, ensures that the police reduce fear. The chapter discusses specific strategies used to address issues of fear in communities. Finally, the chapter examines the extent of fear of crime by focusing on various demographic factors.
