ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses problem solving in policing. Problem solving and community partnerships are two principle components of community policing and represent strategies that go beyond traditional policing. Problem solving requires the police to not only respond to crime, disorder, and calls for service, but also investigate their root causes. As such, police should actively work to prevent crime and improve neighborhood conditions. The chapter discusses the multi-stepped process referred to as SARA, which entails scanning, analyzing, responding, and assessing the response to identified crime problems. The chapter includes discussions of evidence-based problem-solving strategies such as hot spots policing and focused-deterrence.
