ABSTRACT

This chapter presents different influencing processing parameters in friction surfacing. Process parameters are the governing factors which influence the success of any manufacturing process. Along with processing parameters, the material combination is also another important influencing factor must be considered in friction surfacing. The bonding time is an important factor which is connected with the width of the coating during friction surfacing. Mechtrode rotational speed is another influencing parameter directly affects the quality of the bonding between coating and the substrate, width of the coating and the surface roughness of the coating. With higher rotational speeds the width of the bonded coating is decreased. Substrate travel speed is another influencing factor in friction surfacing which dictates the thickness and width of the coating layer. Similar to friction stir welding and friction stir processing, the success of friction surfacing also depends on selection of appropriate process parameters.
