ABSTRACT

Friction surfacing facilitates to develop structures with tailored chemical composition which is not possible with conventional manufacturing methods. In the area of machine tools and cutting tools applications, friction surfacing was used to develop hard surfaces in cutting tool and punches. Friction surfacing facilitates to develop structures with tailored chemical composition which is not possible with conventional manufacturing methods. Friction Surfacing resulted lower level of heat input at the processing zone and decreased the residual tensile stresses which are usually observed in fusion welding techniques. The important challenges involved in friction surfacing process to become as a potential tool in surface engineering are studied by several research groups and reported. As friction surfacing allows deposition of different dissimilar materials layer-by-layer, multilayers surfaces can be developed which needs rigorous study as it opens new areas in connection with additive manufacturing field.
