Gender Identity and Expression

ByTim R. Johnston

We all express our genders through our bodies, mannerisms, voices, personal grooming, clothing, names, and the pronouns we use every day. Gender expression changes over the course of our lives, and an important part of living with dignity is feeling in control of how people perceive us. This chapter focuses on gender identity and expression in a senior living setting, in particular what staff can do to ensure that transgender, intersex, and gender nonconforming older adults can openly express their gender identities.
