ABSTRACT

LGBT older adults are a growing part of senior living communities, but they are often invisible because they may hide their identities and relationships and because many staff assume all residents are heterosexual and cisgender. People working in any kind of senior living environment, from retirement communities to skilled nursing and memory care, have the opportunity to create a space for LGBT older adults to be open about who they are. This chapter presents some statistics and information about LGBT older adults and also orients the reader to appropriate and inappropriate terminology and the major events of LGBT history in the United States.
