ABSTRACT

The staff in most senior living communities come from a wide range of linguistic, cultural, ethnic, political, and religious backgrounds, and each person will have their own opinion about LGBT people and cultures. In order to create a welcoming environment, providers should focus on providing excellent care and services to all residents, including LGBT residents. This may require putting their own beliefs aside, or emphasizing shared beliefs like compassion, empathy, and treating others as they would want to be treated. This chapter outlines the importance of LGBT cultural competency training and how to respond if staff are uncomfortable working with LGBT people.
