ABSTRACT

Many LGBT older adults come out later in life, often after having been married and having children. If they come out of the closet these LGBT older adults may have strained relationships with their families of origin, and often rely on chosen family or families of choice for their care and companionship. Additionally, they may be in long-term partnerships but not have any legal protection, such as marriage or power of attorney. This chapter orients staff to LGBT family structures and care networks, while also preparing staff to handle potential conflicts between residents and their families of origin.
