ABSTRACT

The memoir Tribute to Freud is the pivotal text Hilda Doolittle wrote about her experience in analysis and her relationship with Freud. In addition, she also wrote a poem named The Master, but refused to publish it. The poem was published 20 years after her death along with letters she had written to her friends at that time. Freud is an ambivalent figure for Hilda Doolittle. He is terra firma, the Tree of Knowledge, the Gate-Keeper, contained in the things he loves. The freedom to imagine, to construct and see, takes its toll and has psychic implications. That freedom is what causes Hilda Doolittle the great pain that she feels at her separation from Freud after the analysis terminates and after his death. Freud was always interested in Hilda Doolittle's poetic writing. In a letter to her before the analysis begins, he asks to have her books sent to him.
