ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book concludes with the essence of this distinct kind of writing in three aspects, as suggested throughout the book: writing as a work of memory, writing as a work of mourning, and writing as a translation of the message of the other in apres coup. The work of memory has intrigued psychoanalysis from its very beginning. The primary aim of psychoanalysis was always, for Freud, to “fill in gaps in memory” by overcoming “resistances due to repression”. The book presents a work of memory involving the distinct reminiscence of the analytic encounter and the implications and effects of this encounter on the authors’ lives and evolving selves. The analysands’ works of memory in regard to Freud present the encounter with him as a turning point in their lives.
