ABSTRACT

Most education planning is done through curriculum teams and it is done with teachers and administrators in a structured way that usually doesn’t involve the living breathing world beyond the walls of the school. Every school has a powerful and rich resource right under its nose, right in its backyard – and that resource is its own family network. Teachers, family members of all ages, and community members meet once per month either after school in the evening or on a Saturday for 1.5 hours or so to talk about ideas families indicate they wanted to talk, learn, and plan about. Everyone has choice, voice, and the opportunity for multitudes of two-way conversations. Parent Camps create the one vital thing that’s missing between schools and families, and that is relationships. Parent Camp builds real relationships and drops the walls between family and school.
