ABSTRACT

Derby residents have been directly involved in preparation of collections, the updating of information systems, the identification of interpretive frameworks and, importantly, in both design of the physical museum and the development of its programmes. In 2011, under the insightful leadership of then Head of Museums, Stuart Gillis, the decision was taken to drive change by closing one of Derby's three main museums a small Industrial Museum located in Derby Silk Mill. It also resulted in a very clear sense that encouraging experimentation and creativity were essential ingredients for both individuals and industry in Derby. In particular, the national educational focus on STEM needed to be broadened to include Art and it became clear that for participants, the narrative of the Silk Mill and of Derby should focus on an ongoing story of making. In 2012, seed funding from Derby City Council and Arts Council England enabled engagement of architects Bauman Lyons Associates to develop costed options for the site.
