ABSTRACT

Jing-Mei White Terror Memorial Park is focused around what was the Jing-Mei Military Detention Centre, where political prisoners were held, tortured and tried during the White Terror. Jing-Mei White Terror Memorial Park feels vital as a result, a living space where injustices are being worked through in real space and time. With the help of academic researchers, the readers have faithfully recorded the interviews of oral history from more than 500 victims and their families. Most significant in the shaping of the Jing-Mei White Terror Memorial Park, is the presence of witnesses such as Fred Chin, who was sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment after being falsely accused of setting off a bomb in Tainan in 1970. Combined with the site and the permanent exhibitions which provide some context, the personal testimony of witnesses results in a deeply human and unsettling experience.
