ABSTRACT

The exhibition looked rather conventional, though with some nice handmade touches which broke through the authority and history of the institution. The project team comprised six activist curators and a museum team of curators, collections specialists, learning specialists and Story Lab members. The team worked through a number of established processes towards installation including object selection, content and interpretation and curatorial decision-making including layout and graphic design. The plan was that the museum curators would then work up the first drafts of the texts to mesh the interpretation standards at Birmingham Museums Trust’s which address reading age and text length with the content, directness and tone of voice of the project team. Far from turning visitors off, and reminiscent of other exhibitions where the content is rich and engaging, visitors spend significant amounts of time reading and photographing the text.
