ABSTRACT

In actual practice, it is often the director who has the last word on artistic matters and the producer who has the final say on all things concerning the budget. When beginning a production, the director will read the script again and again, making notes, daydreaming, perhaps screening similar movies along with the cinematographer and production designer and discussing them an old tradition in the film business. The director might also put together an idea book: little sketches, pictures torn from magazines, notes, printouts, etc. This is a good process for the director's thinking, but it can also be a great communications tool when working with the cinematographer, production designer, wardrobe and makeup. On larger productions, this would be a very time-consuming and exhausting task, especially at a crucial time when the director might be working out production details or working with the screenwriter.
