ABSTRACT

The art department is the team that handles anything physical on the set or location that appears on camera. It is the job of the director, the production designer, the cinematographer, and the whole art department. To achieve the overall look, they will coordinate with the director, cinematographer, art department, costume department, makeup department, and more. If sets are being built, the production designer will give sketches and outlines to the art director, who in turn delivers the plans to the construction department. As the head of the art department, the production designer is in charge of making sure each shooting location or built set is prepared, and in tune with the vision of the film (and on budget). Since the art department is usually the largest on any film set, the production manager needs good management and people skills to make sure everyone is on the same page.
