ABSTRACT

Most South Asian Islamist groups like the Lashkar-e-Taiba, which has been very active in the Kashmir conflict, follow the Deobandi tradition. In the contemporary world, there are two major categories of Islamism, although on some occasions in world-shaking events like 9/11, the two categories often come together and merge as one. Contemporary preachers usually produce video and audio tapes instead of books and do so in Western languages to address much larger audiences, thereby transcending ethnic divides and being able to address a new generation of Western-born Muslims. Ethnic conflicts have led to much instability, which has paved the way for organised crime and cross-border terrorism to take place, and this may in turn cause further instability within the domestic boundaries of that particular country or elsewhere in that region. The combination of greed and grievances worsened by poor leadership and vested interests very much relate to ethnic conflicts especially in the global south.
