ABSTRACT

Changes in the demographics of the global workforce, paired with other changes made by organizations to increase profitability, have clearly changed the way work gets done. People change projects, jobs, skills, and experiences as part of a normal part of a career; however, the changes may not have as much impact as the changes created due to the emergence of a new generation in the workforce. The chapter describes the six generations in society, primarily four that are in the workforce. The generations are the greatest generation, the silent generation, baby boom generation, generation X, millennial generation and generation Z. The number of “boomers” in the workforce has been steadily declining as the boomers age, and the number of millennials has surpassed the number of boomers and the number of Generation X individuals in the workforce and will serve as a large voice to influence the changes in how work is done.
