ABSTRACT

This chapter identifies the main technologies already available to enable Internet of Things (IoT) and machine-to-machine (M2M) Internet communications, which have resulted from work already concluded or being conducted in the Internet Engineering Task Force and European Telecommunications Standards Institute, among other standardization organizations. It discusses the attack and threat model for envisioned applications, as well as its main security requirements. The chapter focuses on analyzing how security is addressed for each of the main network technologies, as well as on identifying further research issues and opportunities in the area. The Routing over Low power and Lossy networks working group of the Internet Engineering Task Force was formed with the goal of addressing the design of routing approaches for LoWPAN M2M communication environments. The service connection is established between the Devices or Gateways and the Network Node that hosts the Network Service Capability Layer.
