ABSTRACT

ARDO, WHEN HE described St Benedict of Aniane’s new church at Aniane, founded in 779, was enthusiastic about the symbolism of the arrangement of the altars. 1 There were four altars, a High Altar and three subordinate ones. The latter symbolised the three persons of the Trinity, while the High Altar symbolised the unity of the Godhead. So the Holy Trinity ‘could be recognised as clear as day.’ But only, surely, by those who were attuned to numbers, and who knew the ‘code.’
