A CHAPTER which I could be reluctant let into this book. Professor Edouard Fraenkel, who had written the longest commentary on a Greek play that had by then ever been written, used to complain that the only part of his three-volume work on the Agamemnon which was taken off the shelves was volume 3 – the translation. Will this chapter be the only part of this book which will be read? But it must be let in, because most people in the Middle Ages will have looked at symbols in this simplified way, and most sermons preached, which used symbols, used them in this way. 1
