ABSTRACT
The contemporary counter culture is often damned as ‘parasitical’. It impedes rather than promotes orderly economic progress. It is lacking in ‘relevance’; its supporters are ‘irresponsible’. They are prepared, it is said, to take but not to give. Periods of great economic growth and change are sustained by quite different men: self-disciplined, pre-eminently rational, albeit capable of taking calculated risks.
