ABSTRACT

One important aspect of the counter culture is its attitude to power and authority. This is linked with a concern for personal dignity. Radical questioning of the bases of authority is represented by the anarchist-activist sub-scale B described in Chapter five. This questioning appears to be more widespread among people under, rather than over, forty years of age. This chapter looks at other kinds of evidence for the decline of deference, principally in the recent work of political scientists; and it explores through interviews the outlook and experiences of members of three contemporary protest movements in the field of education : the National Union of School Students, the teachers’ movement, Rank-and-File, and Free Schools.
