ABSTRACT

Having denied that sensible things are grounded in an ultimately real non-sensible material substance, Philonous goes on to claim that the sensible world itself is the real world. As, however, sensible things are mind-dependent the whole of reality depends on some mind ‘having’ those ideas. This line of thought leads Philonous to argue that the infinite mind of God creates and sustains the sensible world. This argument will be assessed and Berkeley’s relation to Malebranche’s theory of ‘vision in God’ will be examined.
