ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses globalization in the late 20th and early 21st century. It identifies as the third wave of global integration since the start of a truly global history with the Columbian Exchange. Somalia, victimized by both the Cold War and unregulated globalization, remains drastically poor. In the contemporary era of globalization, capital or money is free to move across international borders, but people are much more restricted. Kenneth Leman, a member of the Hofstra New Teachers Network, uses a package of websites to help high school students participate in discussion about the impact of globalization. While many of these sites require a high level of academic skill to understand, Ken encourages students to use as many of them as possible. The annual KOF Index of Globalization measures economic, social, and political dimensions of globalization in over 150 countries. Small countries active in global financial markets are considered the most globalized.
