ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of mesh improvement methods and their classification. A more detailed description is given for Laplacian smoothing, which is popular due to its geometry-driven approach and its implementational and computational simplicity. In addition, a global optimization-based approach is described, which results in high mesh quality by applying mathematical optimization. Both methods are based on node relocations only and will serve as runtime and quality benchmarks in subsequent chapters. The last section discusses some exemplaric topological mesh modification techniques based on applying modification templates or node insertion and removal.
