ABSTRACT

The motivational impact is enabling the delivery of initiatives with evidenced benefits, directly impacting on performance across all strategic themes, particularly operational excellence. The Continuous Improvement Directorate sought to work in a way that tapped into the talents of every member of staff within the institution, generating positive employee engagement leading to a long-term culture of continuous improvement. The introduction of daily stand ups has provided a practical mechanism to positively change the institutional culture to one of continuous improvement and collaboration ensuring that the University’s collective mind-set is focused on the future. The concept of marginal gains posits that a number of small incremental improvements to a process can lead to a more significant improvement overall. The University of Strathclyde has taken an innovative approach in the higher education sector to introduce regular face to face communication, reinventing the concept of the daily team briefing as a ‘daily stand up’.
