ABSTRACT

Though Gregor Johann Mendel was accepted as a novice in 1843, it was not until the year 1845 that he began the course of four years’ theological study at Brunn Theological College. During the first year he had to attend, inter alia, lectures on ecclesiastical history, ecclesiastical archaeology, and Hebrew. It was on the day he actually became twenty-five, on July 22, 1847, that Gregor Mendel was ordained subdeacon. On August 4th, he was ordained deacon; and two days later, he was ordained priest. On June 30, 1848, the episcopal commissary Johann von Zelinka, who was principal of the Theological College, gave Mendel a signed certificate to the effect that he had completed his theological studies, and a month later the young man became adjunct in the incumbency of the collegiate church of Altbrunn. The Royal Imperial Territorial Presidium has thought fit to appoint the parish priest Gregor Mendel as supply teacher at Znaim High School.
